YouTube is the most popular video playing and sharing website in the world today. Thus, with its popularity rising each year, many people question who were those people who invented YouTube. The answer to this question is known and these people are awarded and recognized for their invention of YouTube, as well. YouTube was created by three people – Chad Hurley, Jawed Karim and Steve Chen. All these three people were working for PayPal before they invented YouTube. YouTube was started when the trio came up with an idea to create a video-sharing website, where users could watch, upload and share videos. In 2005, the domain name ‘YouTube’ was finally activated and since that time the website has grown and expanded a lot.

Before the trio became so well known, Chad Hurley was a student at Indiana University of Pennsylvania, whereas Jawed Karim and Steve Chen attended the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, where they studied computer science. The first headquarters of Youtube were established in San Mateo, California, above a pizzeria and a Japanese restaurant. In 2005, the domain name of Youtube was activated and the website itself was developed in a few months. Soon, the website began to grow more and more when people began to invest in this website and its board of directors was established, as well. In 2006, the website got a huge investment from Sequoia and Artis Capital Management, who put 8 million dollars into the company.
The first video uploaded to the website was also from one of the people who invented YouTube. It was Jawed Karim’s video titled “Me at the zoo”, the video which he shot when he was visiting the San Diego Zoo. It was uploaded in 2005 and it is still online today and can be viewed on the website.
In the summer of 2006, YouTube became one of the fastest growing sites on the Web. More than 65 thousand videos were being uploaded in a day’s time and more than 100 million video views were done in the same amount of time. Also, in that time, almost 20 million people visited the website per month. The age group which was dominant was 12 to 17 year old’s. In 2006, NBC began to work with YouTube when the companies entered into a marketing and advertising partnership. In 2006, the news was announced that YouTube is going to be bought by Google, which planned to pay 1.65 billion dollars for it.
